E-Point Septal Separation (EPSS)
EPSS is a measurement used in echocardiography to assess left ventricular function. It is the distance between the E-point of the mitral valve and the interventricular septum during diastole.
- Distance between anterior leaflet of mitral valve and septum during early diastole
- Obtained in PSLA view (need LV horizontal)
- Use M mode and place cursor over tip of mitral valve
- In M mode measure distance between mitral E wave and LV septum
- Values: less than 8 is normal EF, 8-18 mild-moderate reduced EF, and over 18 mm is severely reduced EF
- Limitations: mitral valvopathies, arrhythmia
Normal Values
- Normal EPSS: < 7 mm
- Mild LV dysfunction: 7-10 mm
- Moderate LV dysfunction: 10-15 mm
- Severe LV dysfunction: > 15 mm
